The normal expectation is that the successful applicant will be
appointed to the minimum of the agreed scale with annual increments on
1 October each year (subject to completing six months service)
Main Purpose of the Post
The Department of Psychology has a flourishing research community with
research strengths identified by the RAE 2008 in cognition and
perception, health and clinical psychology, and neuroscience.

We are seeking candidates with a strong publication record and the
ability to attract research funding in any area of psychology, but
preference will be given to applicants with expertise in clinical /
health areas of psychology, and / or neuroscience, and / or clinical
neuroscience.

We are looking for applicants who will be able to develop
collaborative links with existing multidisciplinary research teams
within the College of Human and Health Sciences (including Ageing and
Child Research), the College of Medicine, and the Wales Institute of
Cognitive Neuroscience.

Appointees will be expected to contribute to teaching in the core BPS
undergraduate curriculum, to undertake supervision of postgraduate
research students and to work as part of a team committed to
delivering an outstanding student experience. The successful candidate
will also be expected to contribute to postgraduate taught Masters
teaching on one or more of our 3 MSc courses, in Abnormal and Clinical
Psychology, in Research Methods in Psychology, and in Cognitive
Neuroscience. Therefore, experience of teaching and supervision at
undergraduate and postgraduate level is essential.

Applicants should have a PhD in psychology or a behavioural science,
and have a publication profile that would enable them to be included
in our submission for the REF 2014.

Preference will be given to applicants with expertise in clinical
psychology, health psychology or clinical neuropsychology, and/or
expertise in brain imaging, including fMRI, EEG or other neuroscience
methods. Preference will also be given to individuals engaged in
clinically-related practice. An honorary NHS position may be linked to
this appointment, if the applicant has an area of clinical expertise.
Main Duties
This post provides roles for candidates with research and academic
potential and interest in any area of psychology, but preference will
be given to applicants with expertise in either clinical / health /
neuropsychological areas of psychology, or neuroscience.

The appointee will be expected to expand their own research activities
and be capable of linking with existing research areas and research
teams in the College of Human and Health Sciences, the College of
Medicine, and the Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience.
Successful applicants will also be expected to develop their own
portfolio of funded projects, as well as fruitful interactions and
collaborations with wider multidisciplinary research networks. The
appointees will already be operating at an international level,
publishing research in respected journals and obtaining funding, and
the College and Department will ensure support for a considerable
growth in that activity.

The post requires a contribution to UG and PG teaching and research
postgraduate supervision in the Department of Psychology and across
the College of Human and Health Sciences, in addition to sharing
organisational and academic administrative responsibilities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
(a) Research contribution
• To conduct high quality research within psychology. Applications
that add to our strengths in clinically related areas of psychology
and/or research in neuroscience are welcome, but outstanding
researchers in any other area of psychology will be considered
positively.
• To publish in high impact internationally recognised journals, with
a profile sufficient to be included in the REF 2014.
• To obtain grant funding, especially funding from the UK Research Councils.
• To initiate and respond to collaborative research opportunities
within the Department of Psychology, within the College, within
Swansea University, and with colleagues from other Universities both
nationally and internationally.

(b) Teaching Duties
• The ability to deliver high quality teaching in core BPS
undergraduate curriculum areas and to contribute other high quality UG
teaching at all levels in the Department of Psychology and the College
of Human and Health Sciences
• To develop and deliver a specialised level 3 option course related
to your area of research.
• To deliver high quality advanced level teaching on the MSc in
Abnormal and Clinical Psychology and/or the MSc in Cognitive
Neuroscience, and/or other MScs in the College, where appropriate.
• To undertake the role of personal tutor with responsibility for
pastoral and academic support for tutees.
• To work collaboratively and collegially as part of a team committed
to providing an outstanding student experience.
• The University has evolved to a position where quality assurance and
enhancement procedures are integrated throughout all its activities
and all staff must conform to these procedures.

(c) Administrative Duties
The successful applicant will be required to share in administrative
duties, at Departmental and College level, as directed by the Head of
College, for example being actively involved in the recruitment of
students, attending and contributing to appropriate committees and
related activities, and giving research presentations.

Person Specification
Essential Criteria
1. PhD in Psychology or a Behavioural Science
2. A publication record commensurate with a high level of research
performance and stage of career, and suitable for inclusion in the REF
2014.
3. Evidence of research capability and competence in the field of
psychology compatible with the aspirations and facilities of the
College
4. High level of written and oral communication skills and inter-personal skills
5. An understanding of research funding mechanisms and processes and
the capacity to contribute to research grant capture.
6. The ability to teach the core BPS curriculum areas and to
contribute to UG teaching in the Department of Psychology and the
College of Human and Health Sciences
7. Evidence of making a contribution in a research team and the
ability to collaborate at different levels across organisations
8. Evidence of a commitment to continuous professional development
9. Evidence of ability to supervise postgraduate research students to
the completion of their degrees
10. Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and collegially in
research, administration and teaching teams.
11. Experience of teaching and supervision at UG and PG levels

Desirable Criteria
12. Competence in clinical psychology, health psychology, clinical
neuropsychology and/or neuroscience techniques, and/or techniques in
any other area of psychology
13. The ability to teach subjects relevant to the MSc in Abnormal and
Clinical Psychology, and/or the MSc in Cognitive Neuroscience, and/or
the MSc in Research Methods in Psychology
14. The ability to use innovative teaching methods including e-learning
15. The ability to teach subjects relevant to MSc courses in the

16. Professional qualification and practice experience in clinical

research, and must demonstrate a substantial record of regular
publications, which will contribute to the School's research profile

publications at the REF 3* (internationally excellent) level which
will contribute to the Department's REF submission.

Track record of successful grant applications
For appointment at:
Lecturer: Applicants should demonstrate experience of identifying
sources of funding and securing funds to support their scholarly
activities
Senior Lecturer: applicants should demonstrate successful securing of
funds to support their research activities

Track record of leadership
For appointment at:
Senior Lecturer: applicants should demonstrate leadership at the level
of module and course delivery, and in leading research teams that
result in high quality publications.

Background
In the RAE 2008 the Department of Psychology was judged to have 5% of
our research world leading (4*), 30% Internationally excellent (3*)
and 45% Internationally recognised (2*). The RAE panel judged that our
strengths were 'cognition and perception, health and clinical, and
neuroscience.' The Department is expanding Postgraduate Taught Masters
provision and research in Abnormal and Clinical Psychology, and, as
part of the Wales Institute of Cognitive Neuroscience, is expanding
PGTM provision and research in neuroscience, including EEG/ERP and
brain imaging techniques, including fMRI. We are also expanding our
clinical and health PGTM provision.

Terms and Conditions of employment
This is a permanent position and the salary will be on either the
Grade 9 salary scale for Lecturers (Teaching and Research) or Grade 10
for Senior Lecturer (Teaching and Research), against the benchmark
profile for this grade depending on the Academic profile which best
matches your experience and achievements, together with USS benefits.
It may be necessary for these duties to be varied from time to time
