[Comp-neuro] kindly announce this workshop/special issue which will take place next Wednesday (new version sorry)

Dear List managers
Kindly could you announce the next workshop/special issue which will take place next week? Thank you very much!

Workshop Metastable Dynamics of Neural Ensembles, CNS 2013, July 17, 2013 http://dec.bournemouth.ac.uk/newsevents/2013/mar/ne001-computational-neuroscience-meeting-cns-2013.html

Organizers: Emili Balaguer-Ballester and Gustavo Deco

Is the traditional view on brain activity dynamics, in which the cognitive flow of information wanders through multiple stable states, still a robust model? This picture has been recently challenged both empirically and from the modelling perspective.

In this workshop we will address a range of recent complementary views of cortical activity dynamics. In several contemporary models, intrinsic activity fluctuations drive default transitions between metastable states shaped by anatomical connectivity, even in the absence of external stimuli. Noise enriches the dynamical repertoire of deterministic states; creating flexible "ghost" attractors which permit the effective processing of task-related cognitive entities. Another proposed metaphor of transient brain dynamics consisted of successions of metastable states; dynamical objects which are particularly reliable but form which neural activity eventually switches among them, even without the substantial intervention of noise.

During the workshop we will discuss modelling and empirical studies which focus on metastable activity dynamics, transient dynamics during cognitive processing, observed neural variability, emergent patterns of activity and brain complexity among other fascinating topics.
The workshop will take place on the 17th of July.

You are welcome to submit your studies (regular research papers, hypothesis, methods, mini reviews) to a special topic in Frontiers of Systems Neuroscience connected to this workshop:
