Post 1: Head of the Department of Bioengineering and Director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering
Post 2: Chair in Bioengineering
We are seeking to appoint an outstanding leader to act as Head of our rapidly growing Department of Bioengineering and as Director of the associated cross-faculty Institute of Biomedical Engineering. The appointee will hold a Chair in the Department and will provide the academic leadership, management skills, vision and drive to develop further the international standing of the Department and Institute. Applications are also invited for a second Chair in the Department of Bioengineering.
Candidates for both posts will be expected to direct high-quality, innovative research programmes that will advance the reputation of the Department and College in relevant areas. Currently these areas include: Biomechanics; Biomedical devices, sensors and circuits; Biomedical imaging and medical information systems; Cellular, molecular and synthetic biology; Implants and regenerative medicine; and Neurotechnology. The Department is also keen to enter the area of cancer bioengineering. Applicants should demonstrate: an internationally-recognised research portfolio that incorporates modern developments in bioengineering and addresses problems of importance in the understanding of biological phenomena and/or the treatment of clinically significant pathologies; a commitment to excellence in education, with experience in teaching at all levels; and qualities and skills that will foster collaboration locally, nationally and internationally. Candidates will also have a sustained track record in attracting high levels of research funding. Candidates should have an advanced degree (PhD or equivalent) in an appropriate science or engineering discipline or a medical degree (e.g. BMBS, MB BChir, BM BCh, MBBS). Candidates for Post 1 should additionally demonstrate successful professional leadership and management.
Imperial College was ranked 3rd in Europe and 8th worldwide in the 2011-12 Times Higher Education Supplement league tables. The Department of Bioengineering has a long and distinguished history; its pioneering research helped define the discipline. In the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise, 75% of its output was judged either world leading or internationally excellent, confirming its pre-eminent position. It currently teaches approximately 500 undergraduate, MSc and PhD students. The Institute hosts the Centre for Synthetic Biology and Innovation and the Centre for Bio-Inspired Technology; its 7 Technology Networks draw together scientists, clinicians and engineers from across the College to create progress in medical diagnosis and treatment through multidisciplinary collaboration.
