Postdoctoral Fellow position in Computational Motor Control
University of New Brunswick Institute of Biomedical Engineering

A Post Doctoral Fellow in computational motor control, psychophysics, or optimal control to join a dynamic multi-disciplinary team, studying the internal models that upper-limb amputees use to control their. This project will develop models that accurately explain the behavioural decisions amputees make in a series of psychophysics and force-field based experiments, and then use optimal control approaches to improve the control filters and feedback modalities available to amputees. Funding for this position is for a 2-year term.
Applicants are sought who have a strong computational motor control background, and want to apply this background to clinically meaningful problems in interaction with patients and clinicians.
The project is led by Jon Sensinger, PhD, the associate director of the Institute of Biomedical Engineering (IBME) at the University of New Brunswick. IBME includes scientists, engineers, an occupational therapist and a prosthetist / technicians.
Principal Responsibilities
1. Develop psychophysics and force-field based experiments to create accurate computational motor control models of how persons control a myoelectric human-machine interface.
2. Develop an optimal controller that reduces effort and uncertainty in the real-time control of myoelectric prostheses
3. Must work in close consultation with engineering, prosthetists, and therapists
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Required
1. Applicants should have a doctoral degree and relevant research experience.
2. Experience with computational motor control, psychophysics, or optimal control approaches
3. Interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with patients, research subjects, team members, and project collaborators
4. Analytical skills to select and interpret experiments
5. Communication skills necessary to write detailed explanatory reports and articles and to verbally communicate results of research at meetings and conferences
