[Comp-neuro] Topic: PhD studentship in Neural Ensemble Models of the Auditory System (Emili Balaguer-Ballester)

Topic: PhD studentship in Neural Ensemble Models of the Auditory System

Applications are invited for a 3 year; fully-funded PhD research studentship to work on a project entitled "How Cultural Background Influences Sound Processing in Auditory Cortex?" Bournemouth University, UK and UniversitätsKlinikum Heidelberg, University of Heidelberg, Germany.
How does our brain produce an almost immediate and effortless representation of complex sounds such as speech of music? For instance, the rapid perception of the musical register i.e. whether we hear a tuba or a trumpet is a function of hundreds of acoustic cues, widely distributed both in time and in frequency. Understanding the auditory processes which underlie the immediate availability of acquired knowledge is a major challenge for existing models of the auditory system.
In this project we want to develop neuro-computational models for anatomically decomposing cortical interactions involved in the rapid processing of culturally embedded sounds. Towards this goal, we will use Magneto-encephalographic recordings on individuals with different levels of musical training and cultural backgrounds. This project involves the collaboration with a renowned centre on human electrophysiology in Heidelberg; which provides invaluable training and networking opportunities for the PhD researcher.
Applicants with interests or background in neuroscience, with interest in non-invasive human recordings are very welcome. Ideally, the researchers should show interest in developing mathematical analyses thus a strong mathematical background is desirable. Typically the applicant should hold a first or upper second class honours degree or equivalent in mathematics, physics, medicine, electrical engineering, psychology, biology or computer science.
The researcher will be based at the School of Engineering, Computing and Psychology, Bournemouth University, and work with Dr <http://community.frontiersin.org/people/EmiliBalaguer-Ballester/38536> Emili <http://community.frontiersin.org/people/EmiliBalaguer-Ballester/38536> Balaguer-Ballester in the Computational Neuroscience laboratory. Moreover, it will be expected to frequently visit the department of neurology leaded by Dr Andre Rupp<http://www.uni-heidelberg.de/izn/researchgroups/rupp/> at the University of Heidelberg; providing an outstanding opportunity to gain a diverse experience of both neuro-computational and experimental approaches.
The studentship carries a basic remuneration of £14,000 pa tax-free and a waiver of the full-time research student fee (36 months). Closing date of this application is on the first of May, 2013.
