[Comp-neuro] 2 x Cognitive Engineering R&D Positions, Tasmania, Australia

JOB OPPORTUNITY IN COGNITIVE ENGINEERING

The Intelligent Sensing and Systems Laboratory (ISSL) of the CSIRO ICT Centre in Tasmania conducts
research in three key science areas – sensor informatics, digital analytics and cognitive engineering. This
research is directed at a number of application domains including aquaculture, natural resource
management, environmental informatics, demand-side energy management, and government and
commercial services.

We are seeking to appoint two Research Scientists/Senior Research Scientists with a good track record in
research and development in cognitive engineering or related areas. Cognitive engineering includes the
use of theories and methods from cognitive science to inform engineering practice, and the use of
engineering theories, methods and techniques to investigate, understand and augment human
cognition. Cognitive engineering includes user-centred design of human-machine interaction, the design
of information technology based upon human cognitive capacities and functionality, human factors, and
knowledge elicitation, modelling and representation.

The successful applicants will work in multidisciplinary teams developing applications based upon an
infrastructure integrating sensor data networks and digital analytics. The cognitive engineering role will
involve conduct and leadership of user-driven and participatory design, knowledge acquisition and
engineering, and quantitative, empirical evaluation of system effectiveness. We have an interest in
extending cognitive engineering methods into the emerging area of experience design, and the positions
will include the development and operation of a cognitive engineering laboratory equipped with eye
gaze tracking and psychophysiological measurement technologies (e.g. EEG, GSR, EMG, and ECG).
