[Comp-neuro] Postdoctoral position on Brain-Machine Interfaces

A post-doctoral position in the field of bidirectional brain-machine interfaces, integrating bioengineering, computer science and neuromorphic engineering is available at the Robotics Brain and Cognitive Sciences Department of the Italian Institute of Technology in the groups of Dr. Chiara Bartolozzi and Dr. Alessandro Vato.

Research theme:

Interfacing the brain with artificial devices that might restore lost functionalities is one of today's greatest scientific and technological challenges. Brain activity must be correctly decoded and appropriate stimulation should be provided for understanding intentions and delivering feedback, respectively, and appropriate technology has to be developed to correctly interface with living tissue. In the long term, the developed devices have to meet severe constraints of compactness and low power consumption, but also include automatic mechanisms for self-calibration and adaptation to ever changing conditions.

The final goal of the project is to develop a HW system for implementing neural inspired strategies for decoding and encoding neural activity. To obtain this result, the candidate will strongly interact with the scientists developing models to guide them toward feasible hardware implementations. The resulting system will be integrated and tested in a bidirectional brain-machine interface system to evaluate the performances of the developed models.

This work will be part of the activities planned for the FET-Open project Si-Code (pending signature of the grant agreement). The consortium is coordinated by S. Panzeri, at IIT, and comprises Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA, Italy), the University of Zurich (INI, UZH|ETH, Switzerland), the Max Planck Institute for Biological cybernetics (MPI-BC, Germany), and the Centre national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS, France)

The successful candidate holds a degree in physics, bioengineering or computer science and a background in neuroscience.

Location: The IIT is located in Genova, Italy, a charming seaside Mediterranean city right in the middle of the beautiful Italian Riviera, with a vibrant cultural life and with a much more affordable cost of living than many other European cities.

The contract has duration of 2 years. The working language of the institute is English. The Italian Institute of Technology is an Equal Opportunity Employer that actively seeks diversity in the workforce.

Interested applicants should submit a cover letter and detailed Curriculum Vitae to Chiara Bartolozzi (chiara.bartolozzi@iit.it) and Alessandro Vato (alessandro.vato@iit.it).

In order to comply with the Italian law (art. 23 of Privacy Law of the Italian Legislative Decree n. 196/03), we have to kindly ask the candidate to give his/her consent to allow IIT to process his/her personal data.

We inform you that the information you provided will be used solely for the purpose of assessing your professional profile to meet the requirements of Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia. Your data will be processed by  Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia, with headquarters in Genoa, Via Morego, 30, acting as the Data Holder, using computer and paper based means, observing the rules on protection of personal data, including those relating to the security of data.
