Fully Funded PhD Studentship (for home/EU candidates**)
Centre for Systems Neuroscience, University of Leicester, UK.
The Centre for Systems Neuroscience at the University of Leicester, UK, offers a 3-Year Fully Funded (stipend plus fees*) PhD position to Home/EU** candidates, to study single cell recordings in humans – performed in epileptic patients to curative surgery.
The project will investigate concept cells (a.k.a. Jennifer Aniston neurons) – that means, neurons in the human medial temporal lobe that selectively fire to specific concepts, like different pictures and the written or spoken name of a particular person (e.g. Quian Quiroga et al, Nature 2005; Quian Quiroga Nature Reviews Neuroscience 2012).
It is likely that the successful candidate will also contribute to the study of concept representations with related projects using non-invasive scalp EEG recordings (e.g. Navajas et al, J. Neuroscience 2013) and/or with electrophysiology and 2-photon imaging recordings.
The project is embedded within a Human Frontiers Science Program - a sponsored collaborative research team for cross-species comparisons of concept representations (with Winrich Freiwald at The Rockefeller University, Mathew Diamond and Davide Zoccolan at SISSA, Trieste) and theoretical and computational modeling (with Haim Sompolinsky at Hebrew University).
Candidates should, ideally, have very good quantitative skills and a strong desire to understand the neural basis of concept representations and their role in memory systems. They should be able to work both independently and as part of a research team within the Centre for System Neuroscience at Leicester and with our external collaborators.
Interested candidates should send their curriculum vitae and a brief description of their scientific interests to Prof. Rodrigo Quian Quiroga (rqqg1@le.ac.uk), Director, Centre for Systems Neuroscience at the University of Leicester.
The position is available from Monday 6th January 2014.
The closing date for the application is Monday 2nd December 2013.
*The stipend will be £13, 590 per annum (based on 2013-14 rates). Tuition fees will be paid at the Home/EU rate.
**Candidates from outside the European Union will be liable for the difference between 'home student fees' and 'international student's fees'. For the 2013/14 academic year the difference is £11,405. If you are selected you will be required to provide financial assurances.
