[Comp-neuro] Ph.D. Studentships in Computational Neuroscience at the ISRC, University of Ulster

The Intelligent Systems Research Centre (ISRC) at the University of Ulster, UK, invites applications for 3-year Ph.D. studentships. The application process for the Ph.D. studentship is opened with a closing date for applications on the 8th March 2013. A list of studentships offered for the academic year 2013-2014 and the projects’ details can be found at: http://www.compeng.ulster.ac.uk/rgs/showPhDProposals.php?ri=3.

The Computational Neuroscience Research Team (CNRT) at ISRC focuses on both fundamental brain and behavioural sciences, and their applications, especially in the area of clinical neuroscience (http://isrc.ulster.ac.uk/Computational-Neuroscience-Research-Team/Home.html). The available Ph.D. projects for 2013 under the CNRT are:

1.     Computational modelling and data analysis of neural development and related brain disorders. (With St. James Hospital, Dublin, Ireland)

Supervisors: T. Martin McGinnity, KongFatt Wong-Lin, David Watson

2.     The roles of non-neural astrocyte cells in emergent computation and brain disorders – a new computational paradigm. (With Tufts University, USA)

Supervisors: KongFatt Wong-Lin, Liam McDaid

3.     Neural modelling of multiple neuromodulator interactions.

Supervisors: KongFatt Wong-Lin, T. Martin McGinnity

4.     Modelling the neurobiology of stress, anxiety and depression.

Supervisors: KongFatt Wong-Lin, T. Martin McGinnity

5.     B2B: Brain-to-brain – Bidirectional coupling in social interactions and coordination.

Supervisors: Scott Kelso, Damien Coyle

6.     Investigating brain connectivity changes in Alzheimer’s diseases using fMRI and DTI methods. (With Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, Dublin, Ireland)

Supervisors: Damien Coyle, Xingfeng Li, Arun Bodke

7.     Investigating Alzheimer’s disease using large scale models of mammalian thalamocortical networks.

Supervisors: Liam Maguire, Damien Coyle

8.     Developing of fibre tracking algorithm with application to ageing brain. (With Trinity College Institute of Neuroscience, Dublin, Ireland)

Supervisors: T. Martin McGinnity, Sonya Coleman

Other projects related to neural computation can also be found at the above website, under other ISRC research teams.

All studentships, which are highly competitive, will start in September 2013, and include tuition fees and an annual maintenance allowance of approximately £14,000 for EU students, and £13590 for non-EU students. If you wish to apply for a studentship, please follow the instructions at: http://www.compeng.ulster.ac.uk/rgs/. Unless indicated, successful students will be based primarily at the ISRC with opportunities to interact with other related ISRC research teams (e.g. Bio-Inspired and Neuro-Engineering, Brain-Computer Interfacing and Assistive Technologies, Cognitive Robotics, Nanoelectronics), and also opportunities for spin-outs. The ISRC is situated in the city of Derry~Londonderry, which has received the City of Culture 2013 award.

Please note that some studentship (DEL Awards) have restrictions on residence eligibility – see guidance notes for details. For further information, please contact the ISRC Research Director, Professor Martin McGinnity, at tm.mcginnity@ulster.ac.uk and/or the corresponding project supervisors.
