[Comp-neuro] Interdisciplinary PhD position at the interface of mathematics, biology and engineering

Washington State University Vancouver invites applications
for the Individual Interdisciplinary PhD Program (IIDP)
The goal of this program is to support students who are interested in
research across traditional disciplines. Graduate students enrolled in this
program on the Vancouver campus will conduct research on the interface of
mathematics and other disciplines, including computer sciences,
neurosciences, engineering,
biology and environmental sciences. Candidates
having background in one of these disciplines, and desire to increase their
expertise in a complementary discipline, are encouraged to apply.
Particular
research projects include, but are not limited to, modeling and simulation
of
biological, biomedical and environmental systems in concert with
laboratory or
field studies. Several research and teaching assistantships are available.
These assistantships completely cover tuition and provide a financial
support for
up to 5 years.

The formal admission requirements include the following: Applicants
must have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.5 in all graduate coursework and
have
received a master's degree from an accredited institution. In addition to
the
regular graduate application materials, the IIDP application has to include
specific faculty support and details on a possible interdisciplinary
project.
Thus, applicants should be interested in least two complementary
disciplines.

General information.

Founded in 1890, Washington State University (WSU) is a
top-tier research university and the state¹s land-grant university. WSU is
one
of only three universities in the Pacific Northwest and one of only 95
public
and private research institutions with the Carnegie classification of ³Very
High Research Activity.² U.S. News & World Report¹s ³America¹s Best
Colleges² 2007 edition ranked it as one of the nation¹s 55 leading public
research universities.

The WSU Vancouver campus is located within the Portland metropolitan
area in Southwest Washington, across the river from Portland, Oregon. It
combines the excitement of a major metropolitan area with small-town charm
and
abundant recreational opportunities. The combination of city life matched
by
the beauty and benefits of the countryside make the quality of life in
Vancouver among the best in the nation.

Vancouver is located along the I-5 corridor giving residents easy access
to Seattle/Tacoma to the north and the beauty and elegance of Portland,
Oregon
and world class wineries and vineyards to the south. The Pacific Coast is
less than 90 miles to
the west. The Cascade Mountain Range rises on the east. Mount St. Helens
National Volcanic Monument and Mt. Hood are less than two hours away. The
spectacular Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area is only a 30- minute
drive to the east. Biking, hiking, boating, and water sports of all kinds
are a
regular part of the Portland/Vancouver life style. The area also offers the
amenities of a large city. Portland is said to have more restaurants per
capita
than any city in the United States, making it a favorite for food lovers.
Portland is also known for its large number of microbreweries, micro
distilleries, and coffee houses. Arts, theaters, symphonies, museums, and
concerts
round out the rich cultural landscape of the region.
