[Comp-neuro] Post-doctoral research position available at IIT-NBT within the Si-Code EU-funded project

Within the Si-Code European funded project entitled “Towards new Brain-Machine Interfaces: state-dependent information coding”, we are looking for a post-doctoral candidate interested in contributing to this exciting project. The position is available since April 1st 2012 and covers the 36 month project duration.

The Si-Code project targets the development of a radically new generation of bidirectional Brain Machine Interfaces (BMIs) employing neural computational strategies and neuromorphic VLSI devices to discount variability induced by state changes of current BMI approaches. The project converges R&D efforts in the fields of neuroengineering, neuroscience, neuromorphic engineering and neurocomputation and it is carried out by five leading European partners located in Italy, Germany, Switzerland and France.

The candidate will be working in the Department of Neuroscience and Brain Technologies of the Fondazione Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia in Genova (Italy). He will be in charge of implementing an experimental setup combining a high-resolution MEA system and optogenetic tools and will be performing experimental studies to investigate information processing in neuronal assemblies. The ideal candidate has either an engineering University degree in physics or bio-medical engineering with an expertise in neuroscience and experimental studies, or has a University degree in biology or equivalent with strong skills in neurocomputation or engineering.

The young researcher will be based for most of his/her time at the IIT, supervised by internationally recognized experts and will have access to state-of-the-art equipment and laboratories. Proficiency in English is required. In general, we value scientists with a proactive attitude and results-oriented mindset, good interpersonal and communications skills and ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary research team.

Interested applicants should submit CV, list of publications, a statement of research interests, and two reference letters.

Please send your application by e-mail to Luca.Berdondini@iit.it.

The deadline for the application is the 1st of June, 2012.

[Comp-neuro] CNS 2012 workshop: Modern evolutionary algorithms in computational neuroscience

Call for contributions CNS 2012 WORKSHOP.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
Modern evolutionary algorithms in computational neuroscience:
tools to parameterize, explore model properties & design model structures
------------------------------------------------------------------------

July 25, 2012

to be held as part of the Computational Neuroscience conference 2012
July 21-26, Atlanta/Decatur, USA
Organized by OCNS (Organization for Computational Neurosciences)
http://www.cnsorg.org/cns-2012-atlantadecatur

Submission Deadline for this workshop: May 15th, 2012

Topic
-----

In the last 10 years, evolutionary algorithms (EA) have been
occasionally used as tools to help parameterizing computational models
of the brain. As models grow more and more in complexity, manually
adjusting parameters become unreasonable, while automatic approaches,
like EA, can provide acceptable solutions.

Modern EA can also help computational neuroscience beyond optimization:
the use of multiple-objectives EA (MOEA) allows to find multiple
trade‐off solutions to the studied problem, revealing intrinsic
properties of the problem itself, and thus actively participating in the
investigation process. Modern generative EA can also be used to fully
generate the structure of brain networks models based on known
anatomical and electrophysiological data and thus directly participate
in the model design.

The goal of this workshop is to gather neuroscientists around the
current use of EA in computational neuroscience, to advertise the
possibilities of this approach, as well as to discuss the emerging and
future applications of EA in our field.

Submissions and deadlines:
--------------------------

Expected submissions are extended abstracts (1 or 2 pages). Submissions
must be in pdf, following the format style of CNS submissions and sent
to evoneuro_cns_workshop@isir.upmc.fr. Authors interested in giving a
talk should mention it when sending their abstract. On the basis of
available time slots, some of them will have the opportunity to give a
talk at the workshop. Other selected abstracts will be presented as
posters during dedicated sessions.

of motor control. These include motor resonance and action understanding
during action observation, online motor control and motor learning. Plastic
changes induced by learning and stroke are also main interests of the lab.

We are looking for a Ph.D. with a background in Neuroscience and, preferably,
with experience in one ore more of the techniques used in the lab, and data
analysis. Candidates with knowledge of Matlab would have priority. The postdoc
is funded by a fellowship from the National Agency for the Promotion of
Science and Technology (Argentina). Interested candidates could contact Dr.
Valeria Della Maggiore at vdellamaggiore@fmed.uba.ar with a CV, a letter of
interest and one or two references (email).
